Purpose
This procedure describes how to unregister an existing Compass Gateway, back up its configuration, replace the physical device with a new Compass Application Server (CAS), configure it, restore settings from backup, and register the new Compass Application Server to the Priva Cloud.
You will need to do the following steps:
- Unregister an existing Compass Gateway (if it is connected to the cloud)
- Back up the Gateway Configuration and local historical data.
- Physically replace the physical device
- Configure the new gateway
- Restore settings from backup
- Register the new gateway to the Priva Cloud.

Prerequisites
- User name and password for Local Operator
- Pin code for access to the Gateway Setup App
- Proper credentials to access to your Priva Cloud environment with an administrator account
- A blank USB stick. For smaller systems a 2 GB stick formated as FAT32 could be used but a 16 GB stick formatted as exFAT is required for larger systems
- Advanced IP Scanner installed on your laptop or PC
- Network access to the gateway
1. Prepare the existing gateway
Before installing the new gateway, complete the following steps on the current device.
1.1 Log into the Gateway Setup App
- Open the Gateway Setup App on your laptop or PC.
- Enter the PIN code to access the gateway seup screen.
1.2 Create a backup
Create a backup of all settings, preferences, and local historical data.
- Insert a blank USB stick into one of the USB ports on the gateway.
- In the Gateway Setup App, open the Settings tab.
- Click Advanced.
Select Backup to USB Drive.
Once you see the backup confirmation message, click on OK to start the backup
- Do not remove the USB stick until the backup process has fully completed.
Note that there may be problems if your backup is large. If the backup fails, try the following
- Update the Operator to the latest version. In older versions of Operator, the backup would timeout after two minutes, giving an error.
- Make sure the USB has is formatted properly. If it is a 16GB or larger USB, it must be formatted as exFAT. This format allows for storage of files larger than 4GB. Since the backup is one file, it could grow quite large.
1.2 Unregister the gateway from the Priva Cloud
If your system is connected to the Priva Cloud, you must unregister the old gateway before registering the new one.
In the Gateway Setup App, select the Cloud tab.
- Click Unregister Gateway.
- Confirm the action when prompted.
- Returning to the cloud tab, you will now see that it is no longer registered.
2. Replace the gateway hardware
- Power down the old gateway.
- Disconnect all network and power connections, noting which cables connect to each port.
- Remove the Wi‑Fi USB dongle (if present).
- If a 24 VDC to 12 VDC power supply is mouted beside the gateway, it can be removed since the new gateway can be fed directly from the 24 VDC supply.
- Install the new Compass Application Server (CAS) in the same location.
- Reconnect the network cables to the same ports as before. LAN 2 is reserved for the Priva network that have the Compasses connected.
- Insert the Wi‑Fi USB dongle into the CAS (if applicable).
3. Power up the new Compass Application Server
- Connect the power cable to the new device, ensuring voltage compatibility and polarity. The applicaton server accepts a 12–36 VDC supply.
- Allow a few minutes for the application server to boot fully.
4. Configure the application server
4.1 Find the application server IP address
- Open Advanced IP Scanner on your laptop or PC.
- Scan the local network.
- Look for a device whose name begins with PRIVADA‑ followed by letters/numbers. This is the name of your application server.
- Note the IP address. You will need it for the next step.
4.2 Log into the new application server
- Enter the device name or IP address into your web browser. (ie http://privada-123456/ or 192.168.0.88)
- Check whether the Operator version is up to date. You can find the latest operator version at support.priva.com
- If needed, download the latest version and update the applicaton server.
4.3 Configure basic security settings
Note that these security settings are temporary and will be overridden by your original settings when you restore from the backup.
- Create a new PIN code.
- Create a new username.
4.4 Reconnect controllers
The Application server should automatically detect connected controllers.
If no controllers appear. Verify that controllers are connected to LAN 2 on the application server. For each controller, click on the 'connect' button.
4.5 Restore from USB backup
At this point, you will want to restore from the backup you made. Note that this backup does NOT include the controller settings. It is the backup of the two weeks of historical data, the unit preferences and any zones or modules that were renamed.
- Ensure the USB stick that contains the backup is inserted into the new application server.
- In the Gateway Setup App, open Settings → Advanced.
- Select Restore from USB Drive.
- Wait for the restore to complete and confirm the prompts.
4.6 Register the new application server to the Priva Cloud (if you are using cloud services)
- Open the Cloud tab in the Gateway Setup App.
- Click Register to Priva Cloud.
- Select the proper site and register
5. Final verification
- Confirm that all controllers are communicating without errors in local operator.
- Verify that data is being sent to the Priva Cloud if you are using cloud services. This may take anyhwere from a few minutes to a few hours.
- Ensure no warnings or faults are displayed.
- Check that remote access functions as expected (if applicable).
